What is an implant?

An implant is a small, titanium, screw-like device that is placed into the jawbone, typically where a tooth was previously lost. This screw acts as the roots of the tooth that will later hold the crown in place. An implant can chew and function just like a natural tooth.

How does an implant work?

The implant works because bone grows around it and integrates with the implant, thus holding the implant in place. It takes approximately 3-6 months for the bone to integrate with the implant, depending on the quality of the surrounding bone. If a crown is placed before the bone integrates with the implant, it may not heal properly and cause the implant to “fail”. Once the implant has healed, the abutment and crown can be placed onto the implant.

What is an abutment?

An abutment is an attachment that screws into the implant and allows your dentist to cement a crown in place. The abutment is connected to the implant once it has healed. Once the abutment has been placed, the crown will be cemented on the abutment and you will have a brand new tooth!

Are implants for single tooth replacements only?

Absolutely not. Implants can be used to replace single teeth, multiple teeth, or all of your teeth. There are multiple levels of implant placements and your dentist can help you decide what type is right for you.

My dentist told me I need an implant, now what?

Once a patient has decided to get an implant, our office will connect you to a trusted specialist that places hundreds of implants every month. We choose to refer our patients for implant placements because we want our patients to receive the very best care possible. Once the implant is placed and healed, we will coordinate an appointment with the specialist to place your crown in our office.

Does an implant hurt?

Our specialists that place implants are very good at giving you as pleasant an experience as possible. They will always use local anesthesia and can offer IV sedation as well. Having an implant placed is an easier experience than getting a tooth extracted.
